What triggers Quality/Quantity perk changes?

I keep getting increases to "quantity" with my low level Warlock despite relying on few powerful units (aside from my summons, which aren't that great yet) and I'd really like to know how I can avoid that.

If you win a scenario with few losses you get quality, if many - quantity. Generally, taking care of your units' lives gives you a +quality perk.
